5 Picnic Musts

June 8, 2014

picnic 2014Warm weather is the perfect excuse for a picnic in the park. Spending so much time in the city makes me love the idea of throwing some food into a cute basket, putting on a breezy outfit and sitting outside in a green space where I can actually breathe without taking in all the NYC smells I’m exposed to on a daily basis.

Here I’ve pulled together the items (minus food and drink, of course!) that make the perfect picnic.

summer cocktailing

June 1, 2014

Let’s talk summer cocktails. The ones I’ll be indulging in this summer will be of the “mock” variety, but there are SO many options out there for delicious alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks.

I was browsing Anthropologie’s blog (very cool in case you’re not familiar, link here) and came across this sparkling sangria recipe:

The Pretty Dish | www.theprettydish.com

The following content is via blog.anthropologie.com:

***************
WHAT YOU’LL NEED
1 bottle dry white wine

1/2 cup silver rum
1 cup sliced grapefruit
1/2 cup sliced strawberries
2 cups grapefruit soda (or, 1/2 cup grapefruit juice + 1 1/2 cup sparkling water)
Large handful of fresh mint, chopped1/4 cup agave or simple syrup (optional)

HOW TO MAKE IT…
In a large pitcher (we love our trusty Hobnail Pitcher), combine the wine, rum and fruit. Refrigerate and let sit at least one hour, preferably up to eight. Add grapefruit soda (or the juice and sparkling water) and chopped mint; if needed, add agave or simple syrup to sweeten (sodas and juices may vary, so make sure to taste first). To serve, pour sangria into glasses filled with ice, making sure each receives plenty of fruit, or decant into a prettily painted jar and carry to a party.
***************
There you have it. I think this is worth trying, don’t you? You could even do it without the alcohol and I bet it would still taste delicious. Love all the inspiration and ideas you can find around the web. Enjoy the rest of the weekend!

blazer & blue jeans

May 29, 2014

maternity fashion at The Pretty Dish (theprettydish.com)I love “in between” weather. Am I truly annoyed that though it’s nearly June, the air still has a chill on days like today? Yes. But in between weather allows me to break out certain wardrobe items that usually don’t get much play because it’s either too hot or too cold. Enter my favorite blazer…..

It’s from J. Crew, and though it’s no longer available you can ALWAYS count on the Crew for a beautiful selection of blazers each season. They’re made well and the fit is always amazing. The navy striped shirt is by Pea in the Pod (here). It gives the outfit a big of a nautical vibe, which I love. The jeans are by SOLD Design Lab (here, in light wash). They’re super comfortable and I appreciate the fact that they don’t even look like maternity pants! Bag is vintage Louis Vuitton (thanks mom) and the booties are by Nine West (available here in a different texture/color for a STEAL).

In other news, today marks the official beginning of my third trimester. Baby boy will be here so soon!

rifle paper co.

May 28, 2014

Just discovered Florida-based Rifle Paper Co. and there’s no turning back – I’m in love. The stationery, design and illustrations are so up my alley, especially since I’m a big fan of good old fashioned paper.

They’re currently offering a collection by French fashion illustrator and blogger Garance Doré. My picks are below, and the whole collection is available here.

Happy Memorial Day

May 26, 2014

old navy flag scarfToday we remember the men and women who died while serving our country. I hope you’ve had a lovely Memorial Day, and that it included friends, family, love, and a moment of reflection in honor of those we’ve lost.

Catbird

May 25, 2014

There’s this tiny shop in Williamsburg (Brooklyn) that I just love. It’s called Catbird — and on a rainy Saturday a few weeks ago, I finally went there after admiring their website for, literally, years (since 2011!).

catbird on the pretty dish (www.theprettydish.com)Catbird is small, quaint and stocked with items that would make great gifts for friends or treats for yourself.

catbird on the pretty dish (www.theprettydish.com)The real reason I went there was to explore their collection of stacking rings. I love the delicate look, and also the fact that you can wear them above your first knuckle.

catbird NYC on The Pretty Dish (www.theprettydish.com)I left with the  classic hammered ring in rose gold. I wear it either on my left pointer or right ring finger. Next on my list is the tomboy, which is thicker and flat (no hammered look). I’ll wear it stacked with the skinnier one, of course…just need to decide whether I want it in rose gold to match the other, or if I’ll switch it up by getting the yellow gold or sterling silver. Opinions? Please share!

P.S. – The nail polish is “Smokin’ Hot” by essie. Love the purplish gray hue.

grapefruit beauty

May 16, 2014

Beauty Tips from The Pretty Dish (www.theprettydish.com)

Grapefruit packs a major punch as a skincare ingredient. Besides smelling beautifully refreshing, it’s filled with nutrients that brighten, protect, and nourish the skin.  A few of my favorite grapefruit-infused products are pictured above. Enjoy!

  1. Use Sara Happ Lip Scrub to exfoliate dry, flaky lips to reveal a smooth, even texture underneath.
  2. Pacifica’s Brazilian Mango Grapefruit Soap is all natural and perfect for summer.
  3. Fresh’s Hesperides Grapefruit Eau de Parfum is bright, crisp and to be expected, citrusy.
  4. I’ve been a fan of The Body Shop’s Lip Butter since middle school because of the buttery texture, pretty packaging and smooth application.
  5. The refreshing scent of Yes to Grapefruit’s Rejuvenating Body Wash is just the morning wake up call you need.
  6. I love that I discovered Neutrogena’s Pink Grapefruit Facial Cleanser just in time for summer. It smells SO amazing, and you’d never know that it’s also an acne wash.
  7. If you’re seeking an all-natural deodorant that also boasts a pretty scent, look no further – Lavanila Vanilla Grapefruit Deodorant is just for you.

:: sneaks ::

slip on sneakers_edited-1
90’s rewind: slip-on sneakers are back in style, and there are SO many options to choose from. Remember growing up, when you only had Vans and Keds as options? Love those brands, but now there are many more since lots of designers and brands have jumped on the bandwagon (hello Steve Madden, Sam Edelman, Via Spiga, Sperry Top-Sider, Dolce Vita). Enjoy my picks! Now you’ll just have to decide whether to wear these to toughen up a cute summer shift dress or round out a casual, distressed denim look. Either look would be a win. I know one thing, my commute to the city just got much more fashionable!

Rock Your Hair – Review

May 6, 2014

Beauty Tips from The Pretty DishOne of the must-have products in my beauty regimen is leave-in conditioner. Without it, my hair would be a tangled mess after washing and I can’t even imagine attempting to blow it dry in that state. I recently got the opportunity to try Rock Your Hair Leave-In Conditioner Weightless Detangler. I washed, conditioned and rinsed my hair, then lightly squeezed out some of the excess moisture with a towel. I don’t like my hair to be soaking wet when I start adding product and styling, but I do leave it dripping a bit because that seems to help me get the comb through more easily once I add a leave-in conditioner. Next I sprayed the product from my roots to tips very generously and then gently began to work the comb through. This took a while, but was DEFinitely easier than with no product at all. Once my hair was detangled, I added a little argan oil and started drying. Overall, I was happy with the results. The product did not weigh my hair down (as some other conditioners do) but yet it still felt hydrated and had a nice sheen. I’m usually partial to thicker, creamier detanglers that really coat my hair, but this product offered a nice, and more light weight, change of pace.

xoxo………

*This product was gifted to The Pretty Dish for review purposes. Rest assured that I only post on products that I would sincerely recommend.
